YARD SMART COMMUNITY
PROJECTS
 |
'Changing Places,' sponsored and covered by Cleveland’s WKYC Channel
3 and Sun Newspapers, was a kick-off of the popular HGTV show
'Trading Spaces.' The event showcased two related couples who
lived on the same street in Lakewood. While another landscape
company was responsible for the parent’s (Marx) front yard landscape, Yard
Smart took on the re-design of the daughter and husband’s (Smith) home. |
|
Yard Smart was given the opportunity to meet the parents, who helped
design and install the landscape of the daughter and husband’s home.
Yard Smart, Inc. was given a budget for materials and provided the
design consultation and installation labor in exchange for
advertising of our participation in the project. |

Our
before scene shows a typical city dwelling with the front
lawn-dividing sidewalk that leads to the public walks but not the
driveway. The same walk was redirected from the front steps to the
drive with a gathering area to accommodate the arrival and departure
of guests. The limestone walk was relayed along with a soldier
course of the owners’ reclaimed street brick which once served as a
marginal edging to the side perennial garden. The overall cleanness
of the design is accented with the simplicity of the foundation
planting and the sandstone garden wall.
Since the daughter and husband were avid gardeners and loved doing
home repair, the parents initiated a perennial makeover by utilizing
all of the homeowners’ plant material in a newly prepped and styled
planting bed. The side of this yard is blended with the overall
front to give it a larger feel and room to grow. A stepping stone
access provides ease of movement through the planting beds; not only
for the mailman, but to gain access to the water faucet, and through
the side arbor into the back yard. Complete with new and improved
plantings, and the utilization of all the owners’ trees, perennials,
and shrubs --the landscape makeover was completed with daughter and
husband’s interests in mind. See 'AFTER' photos below. |
